Blog Post 1: Concerts and Social Media Content
I mentioned in
class that I make content on social media as a hobby, and while it can range
from sports edits to movie edits and anything in between, a majority of the
videos I’ve been making recently are on the topic of music. Although I don’t
play any instruments, I grew up heavily influenced by music (dad played us all the
classics, brother actually became a musician); I have been to more concerts
than I could probably even list, and to this day it’s one of my favorite things
to do. I don’t just enjoy the music at concerts however. Nowadays, at every show
I go to, I try to make a montage or another kind of edit using a song that the
artist played live there, and post it to my socials.
Everyone knows the
feeling of second-hand enjoyment that we get when we post pictures/videos of whatever
event we went to for others to see, but creating actual content gives a sort of
meta satisfaction that makes it feel like I’m almost contributing to the act in
a small way. Seeing other people connect and interact with something you made
(and someone you love as an artist) adds to the joy you already have as you reminisce
on your experience; it also forms communities with other similarly passionate
fans, and lets the concert “live on” through the algorithm in a way. I attached
a screenshot here of a recent edit I made for a Tame Impala show when I was in
BC over the summer.

I also really enjoy going to concerts, so I can relate to wanting to capture and remember all these experiences. I think it's interesting how creating and posting edits can make the concert feel like it continues even after it is over. It also gives other fans a chance to experience parts of the concert and connect over an artist they both enjoy. Social media can create a sense of community. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, I’m the same way. I love going to concerts and recording videos so that I can 1. look back at them in the future and remember how much fun I had, and 2. like you said, post them on social media so other people can see and interact with them. And honestly, yea, I do think that by doing this, we are contributing in a small way. We are basically helping build a community where people can connect with each other. I think this is important because not everyone finds it easy to talk to people in person. Also, with how busy life can get, sometimes it’s harder to socialize and build connections in person, so doing it online can be a lot easier.
