Blog Post 1 - Sim J

Music is a big part of my everyday life, and I usually choose what I listen to based on how I'm feeling. I don't necessarily follow specific artists or keep up with their personal lives, but I do have certain artists whose music I listen to regularly, like Drake, Future, Rihanna, and Adele. I mostly listen to rap, pop, and R&B, but my music taste changes depending on my mood and what I'm doing. For example, when I'm commuting to school in the morning, I like listening to more upbeat music to keep myself awake and energized. On the other hand, when I'm getting ready for bed, I prefer slower music, especially Adele. Her songs help me wind down after a long day and sometimes even help me fall asleep. I usually listen to music through YouTube because it's convenient and gives me access to different songs depending on what I'm in the mood for. I find it interesting how the same person can listen to completely different types of music throughout the day and how certain songs can change how we feel.

One of the reasons I decided to take this course is because music and digital media are already such a big part of my daily routine, but I've never really thought about how technology has changed the way we listen to music. I think it's interesting how platforms like YouTube make it so easy to switch between different genres and discover new songs without necessarily knowing much about the artists themselves. For my group project, I'd be interested in exploring how people use music to manage their emotions and how streaming platforms influence what we listen to. I would also be interested in looking at how YouTube's recommendations and personalized playlists shape our listening habits, especially when people choose music based on their mood rather than a particular artist or genre.

  1. Hello Sim! I totally agree with you point about the type of music you listen to effecting how you feel. I am the same way! For example, I love listening to more upbeat music at the gym but then slower music if I am doing yoga. I also like your point about how social media platforms like YouTube makes it super easy to find different songs. I find there is no one artist I listen to everyday, rather a large set of songs from multiple artists.

  2. Hi Sim , great post by the way I definitely agree with you on the genre that you listen to Rap, R&B and Pop are probably my top three genres. Upbeat music is the best way to start my day. I feel as though it just sets everything right and puts you in a good headspace especially when you're listening to your favourite artist helps a lot. When discussing why you chose to take this class and reading your post I also have never really thought about how technology changes the way we listen to music and it’s an interesting concept on how it all works together.
