Morgan Carmichael- Blog Post #1

Hey everyone! My name is Morgan, and I'm a 4th-year Communications student. For my first post, I wanted to share one of my favourite artists who changed how I listen to music: Frank Ocean. He was the first artist who really made me feel something when I listened, and he completely changed my idea of what "good" music is. Before him, I just listened to whatever was catchy or how popular the artist was, but his music made me realize a song can be way more than that.  Songs like "Self Control," "Nights," "Sweet Life," and "Pink + White" stuck with me because of the emotion in his writing and how the music connects to emotion. I can put these songs on over and over and still never get sick of them.   I mostly listen to him on late-night drives, going on walks, or working on something. His music is so diverse but almost falls into its own genre; it has a song for every mood that you're in.  Here's a link to my Frank’s favourites  playlist if you want to give it a listen: https://music.apple.com/ca/playlist/frank-favourites/pl.u-WabZbKACdvy8Be8

I took this class because I'm interested in how digital media changes the way we find and listen to music. Frank is a good example since he's so private and his releases always come out of nowhere, but fans online still dig into everything he does. His work makes me think about how streaming changes the way we connect with artists and how fans stay connected to musicians who barely post.

  1. Hey Morgan! First of all, I love Frank Ocean too! “Self Control” is definitely one of my favourites, I could listen to that song over and over. I also agree that his music fits so many different moods, which is what makes his music so good. Thanks for sharing your playlist I’m definitely going to check it out!

  2. Hi Morgan, I like how you describe Frank Ocean as the artist who changed your idea of what "good" music is. Going from listening to whatever is catchy and popular to music that actually makes you feel something is a good shift. I feel like that’s important because then you can learn more about your music taste and what you actually enjoy. I personally don’t really listen to Frank Ocean but I’ve heard plenty of his songs and can agree that his music is very good.
