My Everyday Aural Experience Through Podcasts (CS400U Blog Post #1 - Ella Nickerson)
For me, my most consistent interaction with sound on a daily basis is through podcasts. As someone who commutes to class every day, I frequently find myself getting somewhat bored of music and playlists. Thus, I often bounce between different podcasts to listen to while I drive to school because I enjoy having something interesting to listen to and think about during my commute. One podcast that I always find myself coming back to, however, is The Broski Report, hosted by internet personality Brittney Broski. For those who may not be familiar, The Broski Report is a podcast centred around Brittney’s humour and personal stories, but it also often involves thoughtful conversations about history, art, literature, and politics, which may be surprising if you are only familiar with her most viral TikToks, where she is mostly known for her humour. The reason this podcast resonates with me more deeply than others is that I find that Brittney describes her experiences and way of understanding the world in a very similar way to how I experience and understand it. I have also discovered that we share many of the same interests, and her podcast has introduced me to certain fan communities that I otherwise may not have encountered, which makes me feel more connected to her content.
I chose to take this course because I am interested in how digital media has changed the way we experience, create, and interact with sound. I am especially interested in how platforms like social media and streaming services have changed the way people discover and consume music and other forms of digital audio. For the group project, I would be interested in exploring podcasts, as they have become such a prevalent aural medium in the past decade and have led to the development of so many different subgenres of podcasting, such as true crime, comedy, storytelling, news, interviews, and educational podcasts. I would also be curious about how platforms like YouTube and Spotify have contributed to this development and the increasing popularity of podcasts.
Hello Ella! I loved hearing about how you prefer listening to podcasts over music! I am personally more of a music listener than a podcast listener. I have actually never listened to a podcast before but maybe after hearing about peoples experiences with them in class I will have to try. I remember my dad used to listen to comedy shows instead of the radio when I was younger and I hated it. However maybe as an adult I will change my mind.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Ella. I enjoyed reading about how you enjoy listening to podcasts and how they make your commutes more interesting. I too love to listen to podcasts while driving and am a big fan of Brittney Broski as well! I have learnt a lot from Brittney and she has added great perspective on things.
