The Playlist of High School Memories

Something in the world of digital media that is meaningful to me is my Spotify playlist called "Hits that Hit." It is mostly made up of upbeat throwback songs that I would listen to growing up and more specifically in high school with my friends. This playlist is important to me because I can connect all the different songs to specific memories at different points in my life. Sometimes, a song I have not heard in a long time will come on and it will take me back to where I was when I would listen to it over and over. At the same time, these songs are all fun, so it immediately puts me in a good mood which makes me want to dance and sing along. In my opinion, digital music is not only about having "easy" access to all kinds of music, but it can also be a way of holding onto different memories and experiences for as long as you can.

I chose to take this course because music and digital media are such a normal part of our everyday life, but I have never taken a step back to think about how technology has changed the way we experience sound every day. For my group project, I would be interested in exploring how platforms like Spotify has changed the way we consume music and how playlist become connected to memories. I am also interested in looking into the podcasting world and how certain ones have helped people around the world.

  1. Hi Victoria,

From the playlist cover, to the playlist name, to the first few songs, I can already tell you’re someone I’d want on aux. I love the way you talk about this playlist and music in general. The way our fondest memories can be brought back to us with a single song really demonstrates the power of music. With media and songs being so easily accessible to our generation you wouldn’t think we would hold songs as dearly as we do. But your post demonstrates why music has survived the digital era and will continue to be an important part of humanity, even if that music is “Break Your Heart” by Ludacris. ;)

  2. Hi Victoria!

“Hits that Hit” seems like such a good playlist. Your post really calls attention to the way in which certain songs can transport us back in time immediately upon hearing them and how they can bring back fond memories. The emotions and memories that we associate with certain songs are such an important aspect of listening to music that people often forget about. Also, your idea for the group presentation about how platforms like Spotify have changed the way people consume music is an interesting idea, which made me want to ask you: When did you start using Spotify, and how did it change the way you consume music?
