Vanessa Dinnall Blog Post 1
Hey everyone! My name is Vanessa. I’m a 4th-year Communication student specializing in Digital Media Studies, while also minoring in Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship. Music is so important to me and is a staple in my everyday life. Whether I’m doing work in my room with the radio playing, listening to music through a speaker, or having my AirPods in with the music on full blast, there’s almost always music playing around me. My favourite artist of all time is The Weeknd, with Drake coming in at second. I’m lucky enough to say that I’ve seen both of them in concert, and they sound just as good live as they do on their recordings.
My music taste varies across many different genres, including R&B, rap, hip-hop, pop, alternative, house, and old-school music that my parents grew up listening to. It’s safe to say that my parents have also had a big influence on my music taste, especially when it comes to older genres. Music is always playing in our house, particularly artists like Michael Jackson, Prince and Whitney Huston, so I’ve definitely grown up surrounded by a variety of music.
I took this course because, as a 4th-year student, I need to complete a seminar, but I’m also excited to learn more about digital media and how it influences culture. Since music is such a big part of my everyday life, I’m interested in learning more about how technology has changed the way music is created, distributed, and consumed. Popular music is constantly changing with the times, and platforms like Apple Music and SoundCloud, and other digital platforms have completely changed how we discover and listen to music.

Hi Vanessa, personally I resonate so much with everything you just said! I've actually seen the weekend twice and am hoping to buy Drake tickets in the near future. Growing up, it was all about culturing ourselves with music from better times and that is something I will also always carry with me. Furthermore, I completely understand having music surround your every move and be part of everything you do. I would love to know how your perception of music changes when you hear it in person, who you hear it with, and where you are listening?
ReplyDeleteLiterally my two favorite artists. I can't pick one as the best because I love them both so much. It's so sad that they're beefing, an OVOXO album would feed generations (I'm delusional enough to think it can still happen). And yeah they both sound amazing live, I saw Drake back in 2023 and Abel last year and in 2022. I'm wondering if Drake will do a stadiums for the Iceman tour though. He's never done one (even though he could sell out Rogers easily) and he's said he prefers arenas, but I feel like with the context of everything over the last few years and the run he's currently on, stadiums would be the right move. It doesn't matter anyways, I'll be getting floors regardless.
ReplyDeleteHi Vanessa! Drake and the Weeknd are also a few of my favourites.. and seeing them both live must have been an incredible experience! It’s also really cool that your parents passed down an appreciation for legends like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. Having that foundation definitely gives you a great perspective on how much the industry has evolved.
